| Breaking News | | Monday, December 24th, 1984: Syracuse Announces Deal for Veteran MR Joe Soca stepped before the podium this afternoon with Syracuse officials flanking him on both sides as he doffed the Slammers cap and announced he'd reached an agreement to play in Syracuse for 1 year.
The deal, an estimated $3,350,000 in total, is widely seen as a positive move for an organization looking to upgrade their reliever.
Soca has logged a 47-25 record in his career, appearing in 470 games with 440 strikeouts and 207 walks in 619.1 innings. He has been credited with 18 saves and has a 3.11 ERA. | | Saturday, September 15th, 1984: Halpern Hurt, Out of Lineup 2-3 Months Curt Halpern of the Syracuse Slammers could be headed for the disabled list after suffering a fractured wrist in a game against the Pittsburgh Millers. He is expected to miss at least 2-3 months. The Syracuse left fielder was injured making a defensive play. Halpern said, "Right now I am pretty sore and I don't feel very good at all."
In his stats this season, Halpern has posted a batting average of .299 with 145 hits in 485 at-bats, 11 home runs and 76 RBIs. He has also scored 73 runs, walked 82 times and compiled a .393 OBP. | | Sunday, September 9th, 1984: Parnell Sizzles! Smokes Whalers for 5 Hits! On top of the Syracuse hit parade today was Rich Parnell. He went to the plate 6 times and marched away with 5 hits, sparking the Slammers to victory 17-1 over the Hartford Whalers. He certainly had their number at the plate in this record-making 5-6 performance.
The sweet swinging right fielder told reporters, "Each time I went to the plate, I was thinking about hitting the ball hard somewhere. When I focus on that, I usually have quality at-bats."
The skipper of the Whalers wailed to the press, "Too much plate. Not the way we planned it. Any hitter in the league will rip you when you do that."
R. Parnell singled in the 1st, struck out in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and doubled in the 9th.
This season Parnell has delivered 135 hits in 513 at-bats for a .263 average with 15 home runs. He is getting on base at a .308 pace and his totals also include 68 RBIs, 34 walks and 73 runs scored. This year Parnell has played in 123 games. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 75-87, .463 PCT | | Position in Division | 3rd, 17.0 GB | | Record at home | 34-47, .420 PCT | | Record on the road | 41-40, .506 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 4-8, .333 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 25-17, .595 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 15-21, .417 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 60-66, .476 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 5-5, .500 PCT | | Record in April | 14-12, .538 PCT | | Record in May | 11-18, .379 PCT | | Record in June | 11-15, .423 PCT | | Record in July | 11-14, .440 PCT | | Record in August | 10-18, .357 PCT | | Record in September | 18-10, .643 PCT |
